Congratulations, Bob!
Bob is our Head Grower here at Culver’s, and this year he is celebrating 50 YEARS of growing professionally! He began his journey when he started his first vegetable garden at just 8 years old. Bob grew a little bit of everything, including peppers, onions, broccoli, tomatoes, and his favorite… watermelon! Funny story – Bob was a little disappointed with his watermelons the first year, so his dad secretly bought ripe watermelons, drilled a hole in the ends, and put them on the vine for his son to find. Of course, Bob didn’t know the truth until years later.
Bob started his professional growing career at 18 years old and never looked back. Over the years, he has helped thousands of people with their plant questions, always sharing his knowledge and guiding them in the right direction. We’ve now had the honor of working with Bob for 24 years, learning something from him every day and always catching a good story.
Each year, Bob leads our growing team in hand planting and caring for over 100,000 annuals, vegetables and herbs. Out of the hundreds of varieties he grows, his favorite would have to be the bougainvillea. “They’re just so cool and always so breathtaking. I love the vibrant colors and unique flowers.” – Bob
Bob’s favorite memory of his growing career was when he got an orchid in the 1970s. They were an incredibly rare plant, very expensive, and hard to find. After searching for many years, he was finally able to purchase one of his own, and it was a proud moment for sure.
Thank you for everything you’ve done for the plant community, Bob, and cheers to over 60 years of growing! We’re excited to be on this journey with you.
